UPDATE 1: Source of New Haven Harbor Oil Spill identified and secured

NEW YORK – Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound's pollution response team and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are working with New Haven Terminal to clean up oil in New Haven Harbor, Conn., Friday, July 8, 2011.

Contractors from New Haven Terminal located the oil leaking from a patch on an underground pipeline on Alabama Street in New Haven today. The oil flow to the pipeline was immediately stopped.

New Haven Terminal assumed responsibility for the full cost of the recovery operations and hired Alpine Environmental, of Middletown, Conn., for cleanup efforts.

Alpine Environmental recovered approximately 20,000 gallons of oil that leaked into monitoring wells and a trench that was dug alongside the pipeline. Additionally, a vacuum truck crew removed approximately 200 gallons of oil from the boomed containment area in New Haven Harbor.

“Protecting our environment is everyone’s responsibility,” said Cmdr. Eric Doucette, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound Response Chief. “We work with numerous agencies to carry out this important mission and ensure a quick and effective response.”

The Coast Guard will continue to monitor cleanup operations during the response.
