CLEVELAND — Coast Guard Seaman Jarrod Reed, an East Liverpool, Ohio native, received a congratulatory letter from Rep. Bill Johnson, Ohio's 6th Congressional District, May 29, 2012, for his actions that led to the rescue of five fishermen after their boat sank a few hundred miles south of Jamaica, in January 2012.

Reed, a newly-reported crewmember aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Venturous, a 210-foot Medium Endurance Cutter homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla., and two other break-in watchstanders were recognized as the Coast Guard's Shipmates of the Week Jan. 27, 2012.

"We saw a flashing light, and it didn't look like anything that we normally see out there," said Reed during the ceremony. "I certainly didn't think that it would be five guys in the water after their boat sank. It shows that no matter where you are on the totem pole, anyone in the Coast Guard can make a difference."
