Coast Guard Academy announces 2012 Distinguished Honor Grad
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is scheduled to hold its 131st Commencement exercises Wednesday at 11 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field at the academy here.
U.S. Coast Guard Academy First Class Cadet Katie Schumacher, 21, earned the distinction of the Class of 2012's Distinguished Honor Graduate through high proficiency in all three of the academy’s developmental domains: academic, athletics and military bearing.
“I felt extremely honored to receive such recognition,” said the St. Louis native. “It is truly a testament to the amazing officers and faculty and staff here at the academy that I stand where I do today. I have been blessed to be able to perform well in academics during the four years at the academy with the additional cross country, swimming, track and regimental positions I took on. God, family and the Class of 2012 have been there for me during the tough, hectic and stressful times.”
“First Class Schumacher has distinguished herself as a scholar and leader throughout her four years at the academy," said Commandant of Cadets Capt. John O'Connor. "She is a true role model for all who follow. We are proud to have her as our distinguished graduate and look forward to bearing witness to her successes as a commissioned officer in our Coast Guard.”
During Wednesday's ceremony, 233 cadets will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in one of eight majors and will be commissioned as ensigns in the U.S. Coast Guard.
