Coast Guard transports ailing 70-year-old man from sailing vessel near Milwaukee
CLEVELAND — A Coast Guard rescue boatcrew successfully conducted a medical evacuation of a 70-year-old man Sunday afternoon.
The man's name is not being released, and there is no imagery from this case.
A search and rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, was contacted at 11:54 a.m. CDT by someone aboard the sailing vessel Dennis Sullivan who reported that the man was disoriented and showing other symptoms of dehydration or stroke.
A rescue boatcrew launched aboard a Coast Guard Station Milwaukee 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and was underway within 10 minutes. Once on scene, the crew took the man aboard the RB-M and transported him to McKinley Marina, where he was transferred to awaiting EMS from Milwaukee at 12:14 p.m. CDT.
The Dennis Sullivan is a 137-foot U.S.-flagged schooner.
The vessel's VHF-FM marine radio allowed the crew to contact the Coast Guard on Channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency. Marine radios are much more reliable in the marine environment, working in areas that cell phones may not.
Station Milwaukee was the first Coast Guard unit in the Great Lakes to acquire a 45-foot RB-M. Click here to read a news release from October 2008, when the station took delivery of the boat. With a top speed of more than 40 knots, the highly capable RB-M allows crews to arrive on scene faster.
