Coast Guard rescues 4 people in Lake Michigan
CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued four people from a partially sunk boat in Lake Michigan, two miles northwest of Frankfort, Mich., Monday night.
The names and hometowns of the people rescued are not being released, and there is no Coast Guard imagery.
A search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, received a distress call at 8:45 p.m. on VHF-FM marine radio channel 16 of four people on a partially sunk 22-foot boat in Lake Michigan.
A Coast Guard rescue boatcrew from Station Frankfort launched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small.
The people on the boat were transferred to the RB-S and taken to Station Frankfort.
There were no injuries reported.
A commercial salvor towed the boat to Frankfort boat launch.
“The people on the boat did the right thing by broadcasting a distress call over the marine radio,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Alexander Caldwell, officer-of-the day at Station Frankfort.
“A broadcast over channel 16 not only alerts the Coast Guard but other agencies and other boaters who can help.” Channel 16 is the international hailing and distress frequency.
The Coast Guard recommends all boaters have a VHF-FM marine radio aboard their boat. Often cell phone coverage can be unreliable on the water.
