CHICAGO – The Coast Guard presented Capt. Michael McElroy, chief of operations for Wendella Sightseeing, with a Meritorious Public Service Award at the Passenger Vessel Association Conference in Cleveland, Tuesday.

Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander, 9th Coast Guard District, presented the award to McElroy for his significant contributions and commitment to improving maritime and life safety practices in the Port of Chicago.

In 2011, McElroy assumed the duties of training manager for Wendella Sightseeing and implemented a comprehensive training program that improved emergency response readiness, which played a role in Wendella crews saving 12 lives that same year.

In addition, as the port engineer responsible for the mechanical operations, McElroy implemented an effective preventive maintenance program that helped increase the fleet’s operational reliability.

“Captain McElroy’s highly proactive involvement in crew training and operational performance of the Wendella fleet sets the bar for unwavering dedication to marine safety,” said Parks. “ The Coast Guard is proud to recognize him, his crew and his company for helping to lead a team effort in the year–round marine safety campaign in Chicago."
