Coast Guard base remains closed, prepares for operational units
JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, N.J., remains closed following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy Tuesday 10 a.m.
Coast Guard crews assessing the training center to ensure the base is ready to support operational units that are returning for post-storm rescue and recovery operations. Coast Guard officials are also making preparations to resume basic training at the base as early as Wednesday afternoon.
Facilities engineers from Training Center Cape May evaluated the storm’s impact to the base’s waterfront, which is home to five Coast Guard cutters and numerous Coast Guard small boats. Aside from minor electrical damage, the piers appear to structurally stable, and Coast Guard officials are clearing the way for operational units to return to the base.
More than 260 Recruits who were evacuated from Training Center Cape May Sunday will begin returning to the training center from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Wednesday. The recruits continued training at the joint base, which is uniquely situated as a mobilization point for large numbers of service members, and provided an adequate training facility to ensure the recruits didn’t miss critical practical and classroom instruction.
There is no apparent damage to the more than 174 Coast Guard housing units in Cape May. Coast Guard Police are maintaining an active presence in the housing, and Coast Guardsmen and their families will be notified when it is safe to return to their homes on Training Center Cape May.
Graduation ceremonies for more than 66 recruits will continue as scheduled Friday. Recruits’ family and friends should check Training Center Cape May’s webpage for the graduation schedule at www.uscg.mil/hq/capemay.
