Coast Guard responds to fuel spill

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a fuel oil spill near Mariner’s Harbor, Staten Island, N.Y., today.

The National Response Center notified the Coast Guard of the incident, which took place at Mays Ship Repair at 11:22 p.m., Friday. It was reported the spill is coming from a barge due to a leak from a cargo tank.

The barge was reportedly carrying nearly one million gallons of #6 fuel oil, but it is not known how much of the product was discharged.

Coast Guard Sector New York Pollution Responders are on scene investigating the impact of the spill. A broadcast notice to mariners is in place advising mariners to transit the area with caution due to pollution.
