Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound to hold change of command ceremony

NEW YORK — The media is invited to Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s change of command ceremony at Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Conn., Friday.

Captain Joseph Vojvodich, who took command of Sector Long Island Sound, as well as becoming Captain of the Port of Long Island Sound, in June 2010, will be relieved of his duties and responsibilities by Capt. Edward J. Cubanski III. Cubanski has served as the Response Division Chief from 2012-2013, and the Incident Management Branch Chief from 2010 to 2012 for the Eighth District in New Orleans, LA.

Unique to this ceremony, Captain Vojvodich will be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral by Rear Admiral Dan Abel, the Coast Guard First District Commander. Upon relief of command, Vojvodich will transfer to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C. where he will be assigned as the Program Executive Officer (PEO) and Director of Acquisition Programs for his first flag tour.

Sector Long Island Sound is the largest operational field command in the Coast Guard. With more than 550 active duty personnel and civilian personnel, and 180 reservists, the Sector is charged with maritime safety, security and stewardship for the Port of Long Island Sound.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition, which formally acknowledges the transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.

The Coast Guard is a multi-mission, maritime, military service and is part of the Department of Homeland Security.  It is unique among federal agencies in that it is at all times an armed service, while also a humanitarian, regulatory, law enforcement, environmental and emergency management agency.

Media interested in attending should contact Lt. Jeff Janaro at (203) 468-4455 to confirm attendance.
