Coast Guard medevacs fisherman near Cordova, Alaska
JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced an ailing fisherman from a fishing vessel 70 miles west of Cordova Monday.
The aircrew safely hoisted and transported the crewmember of the fishing vessel Ruth M, who was reportedly experiencing stroke-like symptoms, to emergency medical personnel in Cordova for treatment.
The helicopter crew, forward-deployed to Cordova for the summer season, was conducting a routine patrol when Coast Guard Sector Anchorage command center watchstanders received the medevac request from the crew of the Ruth M, and diverted the aircrew to the ship’s location.
“Our forward operating location in Cordova is a crucial asset during the busy summer fishing season in Southcentral Alaska,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class James Colson, a watchstander at the Sector Anchorage command center. “During an emergency medical situation minutes count, and the FOL cuts hundreds of miles off the distance our crews have to travel when providing assistance.”
