Coast Guard Los Angeles - Long Beach unit receives readiness award
San Pedro, Calif. – Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Los Angeles - Long Beach, Calif., was awarded the Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award, August 20 for excellence in operational readiness during its January 2013 Standardization Team Visit Evaluation.
“I am continually proud and humbled by this professional crew that performed so admirably during the most important operational assessment we have in the boat forces community,” said Lt. Cmdr. Taylor Lam, commanding officer of MSST LA-LB. “It was an all-hands-on-deck effort that continues the proud tradition of mission excellence, outstanding readiness, and crew dedication at MSST LA-LB.”
MSST LA-LB was assessed on underway crew proficiency, material condition of unit’s assets, command training program, and compliance with strict standardization in rescue and survival systems. The crew of MSST LA-LB met or exceeded the Coast Guard’s average in nearly each category and is one of several Deployable Specialized Force units to have earned the Kimball Award in the recent past.
“This award is a first for the unit and a significant accomplishment highlighting the proficiency, teamwork, and support necessary to achieve such a distinguished honor in our boat forces community,” said Cmdr. Ed Gaynor, Coast Guard Pacific Area Deployable Specialized Forces section chief, who presented the award.
MSST LA-LB performs a variety of maritime law enforcement, homeland security, and defense missions both domestically and abroad.
The Kimball Award, named after Sumner I. Kimball, the General Superintendent of the Life-Saving Service from 1878-1915, was established in 2001. The award recognizes Coast Guard Boat Force units that exemplify the Coast Guard’s motto of always ready. On October 1, 2013, the Kimball Award will be retired from the Standardization Team Visit Program.
