Coast Guard conducts medevac from fishing vessel near Kiribati

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a crewmember from a fishing vessel located approximately 280 miles southwest of Kanton Island, Kiribati, Tuesday.

At 11:35 a.m., Monday, watchstanders at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu received notification from the fishing vessel Jeanette regarding a crewmember who suffered stroke like symptoms.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and recommended a medical evacuation of the 66-year-old man.

The JRCC instructed the crewmembers of the Jeanette to divert from their fishing patrol and head to Kanton.

At 1 a.m., Tuesday, a HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu was launched to conduct a medevac of the crewmember.

At approximately 8:10 a.m., the Hercules aircrew landed in Kanton, picked up the man and transported him to Pago Pago, American Samoa where he was transferred to emergency medical personnel. He was then taken to Lyndon B. Johnson Tropical Medical Center for further treatment.
