Coast Guard rescues 3 from sinking boat

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — A Coast Guard boat crew rescued three men from a swamped boat in the Brownsville Ship Channel Friday.

The 16-foot pleasure craft was taking on water when the men called 911 at 6:09 p.m. Cameron County Emergency Management helped guide the rescue boat crew to their position.

The boat crew, from Station South Padre Island, rescued the men in the ship channel near the Jaime J. Zapata Memorial Boat Ramp. They brought the men to safety and they were checked out by local EMS.

"A cold front came through, wind blowing 25 with gusts to 30, and it's getting down to 45 tonight," said Gary Walker, the search and rescue coordinator at Sector Corpus Christi. "The chances of someone coming along through there is very slim. They certainly could have become hypothermic."

The partially submerged boat is off to the side of the ship channel and will be recovered by the owner with shallow water craft.
