Captain of the Port sets safety zone for Stephen L. Colby response efforts

LECLAIRE, Iowa – Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River Captain of the Port has issued a safety zone near the Stephen L. Colby response site, Saturday.

Capt. Byron Black, Captain of the Port, has set the safety zone on the Iowa riverbank extending outward 1,000 feet near Ferry Street to one mile down river near Canal Shore Drive SW, the to protect the public and response crews during cleanup and salvage operations.

The Stephen L. Colby Response Unified Command continues to conduct cleanup and salvage operations for the partially submerged towboat near LeClaire.

The Coast Guard, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service and local emergency crews continue to work on preventing and minimizing the environmental impact for both the public and wildlife.

The unified command has deployed 37 response personnel, 11 workboats and three skimmers to continue the cleanup and salvage efforts. The response crews have also deployed 3,000-feet of containment boom and 2,900-feet of sorbent boom near the site.

Response crews have recovered approximately 88,601 gallons of oily-water mixture from the vessel and about 49,635 gallons of oily-water mixture from the river.  The crews have collected more than 1,400-feet of oiled cleanup materials.

The unified command urges the community not to handle any wildlife to for public and wildlife safety. Response crews continue to conduct hazing tactics to divert wildlife from becoming oiled.
