DHS, Coast Guard to honor US Airways rescuers

NEW YORK — The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to hold an award ceremony Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the New York Waterway Terminal,West 39th Street and 12th Ave. in Manhattan, to honor the Good Samaritan mariners who responded to the US Airways plane crash in the Hudson River.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen will present public service awards to recognize the mariner that helped the Coast Gaurd carry out its lifesaving mission. Also in attendance will be First Coast Guard District Commander Rear Adm. Dale G. Gabel, New York Captain of the Port Robert O'Brien and President and Chief Executive Officer of New York Waterway Arthur E. Imperatore Sr.

More than 100 Good Samaritan mariners responded to the scene of the crash instantly, demonstrating remarkable preparedness, seamanship and courage while rescuing all 155 people despite near freezing water temperatures.  Additionally, they quickly and effectively provided vital staging areas on shore for first responders and survivors.
