WASHINGTON— The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday that it will hold a public meeting scheduled for March 12 at Coast Guard Headquarters, Room 2415, 2100 2nd St., SW, Washington, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to accept comments from the public on its Certificate of Adequacy program for port reception facilities.
In accordance with U.S. laws implementing the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), U.S. ports are obligated to provide adequate reception facilities for waste oil substances, chemical cargo residues from tank washings and garbage generated aboard operating ships that visit U.S. ports. The Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships authorizes the Coast Guard to ensure compliance with the MARPOL provisions for port reception facilities. The Coast Guard is inviting comments from all interested parties on how to better protect the marine environment, minimize discharges to the ocean from ships and improve our efforts to implement MARPOL and provide adequate reception facilities at our ports and terminals without unduly delaying commerce.
The Coast Guard encourages the public to attend this meeting. Interested parties should register for the meeting by sending an e-mail with each attendee's full name and affiliation to HQS-PF-fldr-CG-5442@uscg.mil at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. To view the meeting notice online go to www.regulations.gov and enter the docket number: USCG-2009-0999.
