Coast Guard to present award to Sen. Breaux

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Coast Guard will present the Commodore Ellsworth P. Bertholf Award to Sen. John Breaux in room 253 of the Russell Senate Office Building, 6 p.m. tomorrow.

“Senator Breaux has been a key advocate of the Coast Guard and its missions,” said Adm. Thomas H. Collins, commandant of the Coast Guard.  Senator Breaux has been a pioneer in building consensus on both sides of the aisle while promoting recreational boating safety, homeland security, and support for the men and women of the Coast Guard, and his legislative efforts on behalf of the Coast Guard will be greatly missed following his retirement from Congress.”

The annual Commodore Ellsworth P. Bertholf Award is named in honor of the officer who successfully consolidated the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915 and served as the first commandant of the modern U.S. Coast Guard.  The award – a traditional “watch glass” telescope which symbolizes nautical heritage and long-range vision – honors members of Congress whose leadership supports the men and women of the Coast Guard and the service’s many missions.

NOTE TO EDITORS:  News media wishing to cover the awards ceremony must contact Lt. Cmdr. Mike Cribbs at (202) 224-2913 by 4 p.m. Wednesday to gain admittance.
